Great 1911 Popular Mechanics Article

03/14/2010

Brian Pratt of the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group flagged a wonderful article from the August, 1911 edition of Popular Mechanics. The article was written by Barney Oldfield who made no friends with his astonishing accusations against the sport of auto racing and especially its fans, whom he called "bloodthirsty." At this point in his career Oldfield was serving his most extended suspension by the American Automobile Association (AAA) due to this October 25, 1910 unsanctioned match race with world heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Johnson. It follows that this censure impacted Oldfield's well established cantankerous attitude.
