Great Package on First French GP

09/29/2009

I've pulled together a nice package on the first French Grand Prix held in 1906. I have two great articles, one from The Motor World and the other from Motor Age, plus well crafted video you can see below. This video has excellent footage - borderline amazing, actually, considering the age of the film. The race had several story lines. First the controversy over staging the event at all, as many saw the French as trying to manipulate international racing. Second, the heat of the two-day affair combined with chemicals of the gummy tar paving materials adhered to dust from the Macadam surface and found its way into the eyes of the competitors. Several drivers were virtually blinded by the toxic elements. Finally, and perhaps the biggest factor in determining a victor, was the removable rim technology introduced at the race. This reduced tire replacement time by as much as 12 minutes. Those that elected not to use the new rims accepted a penalty too large to overcome. In the end, it was Ferenc Szisz brought his Renault home first.
