Lunch with the Rutherfords

I had the good fortune to have lunch with Johnny and Betty Rutherford at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today. I met them in 1997 when I was running the Nortel sponsorship of Scott Goodyear at Treadway. Aside from their always gracious company, Betty told me something I had never heard before about Speedway history. Some of you may recall that in 1960 makeshift scaffolding in the infield collapsed, injuring several people. This happened very early in the race. Betty Rutherford, a young nurse was at the Speedway and scaled a fence and scrambled to aid some of those injured. She spent the next couple of hours applying first aid. I had no idea...
