Detroit to Indy - Mulford in His Race Car

03/12/2009

I recently came across an interesting news item from 1911 that typifies the vast difference from the pioneering days of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the way the world works today. Lozier driver Ralph Mulford drove from his company headquarters in Detroit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in his race car. What's more, his wife rode with him - in the riding mechanic's seat. This is the color of the early days of racing that makes the history so compelling. No motor sports facility on Earth comes close to matching the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's claim on history.
