This image is not particularly good, but it illustrates how some spectators at the first Indianapolis 500 were able to find access to areas where there were accidents. Not surprising if you are well read in the history of the period - in many events, such as the Vanderbilt Cup, they actually ran onto the course during races - but such behavior is outrageous by today's sensibilities.
