The great Los Angeles-to-Phoenix off-road race (more commonly known as "The Cactus Derby") was another of the terrific classics from the sport's early days. In its 1914 edition, track racing legend and barnstormer Barney Oldfield entered the same Stutz racer he had piloted to fifth place in that year's Indianapolis 500.
Check out a nice selection of photos from the 1915 Vanderbilt Cup plus others from the race's revival in 1937. Conducted in monsoon-like conditions the 1915 Vanderbilt Cup was one of the greatest races of all time with Dario Resta dominating. Even masters of car control like Ralph DePalma and Barney Oldfield pulled off the course.
