1909 IMS Post Card

This image of an artist's rendering of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway appeared in the June 6, 1909, Indianapolis Star while the track was under construction. Note that the original concept of the Speedway called for a road course through the infield that gave the facility the flexibility to stage both oval and road course races. As noted in the heading above the image the 1909 national balloon championship race hosted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was underway. The perspective of this image is from the north end of the track, a little to the east. The engineer who designed the Speedway was Park Taliaferro "P.T." Andrews.
