Oldfield Sets New Track Record

This image of crowd favorite and legend Barney Oldfield at the wheel of his record-setting Benz was originally published in the August 20, 1909 Indianapolis Star. It was part of the coverage of the first auto races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that began the previous day.

Oldfield drove his Benz to a new "track" mile record of (note this is not the Blitzen Benz although it is reported as such in D. Bruce Scott's Indy:Racing Before the 500 and other authoritative sources) 43.1 seconds to eclipse a long-lived record of 48.2 seconds set by Webb Jay in the Whistling Billy steam powered White Motor Company race car back in 1905.
