Spencer Wishart at Elgin

This photo is of Mercer driver Spencer Wishart at the Elgin, Illinois road races of 1912. The original source says this is a shot of Wishart and the car he drove in the Aurora Trophy and that he did not finish the race due to a broken axle on lap 13. Wishart was a charismatic, young, blazingly-fast driver who burst on the racing scene in 1908. The son of millionaire Wall Street financier George Wishart, Spencer purchased a Mercedes to get started racing but by 1912 was hired by the Mercer team. He finished fourth in the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 and second in the 1913 race. He was killed at Elgin in 1914 while leading that year's edition of the road racing classic.

Spencer's sister, Mary, wed 1916 Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Resta, who also lost his life at the wheel of a race car.
