Barney Oldfield - Gold Medal for First 100 MPH Lap at Indy

This is a medal that Barney Oldfield was awarded for turning the first 100 MPH lap at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The beautiful solid gold medal has an inscription on the back that reads: "To Barney Oldfield, Establishing lap record, May 28, 1916, Car Christie, Time 1:27.70, Average 102.623 MPH, Compliments, Indianapolis Motor Speedway." According to the Bonhams auction Web site this medal's estimated value comes in at $40,000 to $70,000. Silver and Bronze versions of this medal were also produced by Tiffany & Co. for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
