Fred Wagner By Lazarnick

Thanks to the Paul Sheedy Collection for this photo. This photo was captured by Nathan Lazarnick, one of the most revered photographers of the early twentieth century. It is of Fred Wagner, one of the top American Automobile Association (AAA) officials of the era. Wagner was the first starter of the Indianapolis 500 and flagged for every Long Island Vanderbilt Cup except the inaugural in 1904. In these early days, a race starter was one of the most powerful officials of auto races.
