Speedway Montage

This image ran in the Indianapolis Star on August 8, 1909. It reflected the excitement about the opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That same week the first motorized races were to take place the Federation of American Motorcyclists (FAM) national championship motorcycle races. The following week the first automobile races at the Speedway were to take place.

These images show various aspects of the track, such as a pedestrian bridge and the view from it. Note the image of amateur champion Stanley Kellogg on his Merkel motorcycle as well as the Overland automobile that was the official trailblazing car of the Cleveland-to-Indianapolis endurance run that would kick off the week of motorcycle events.
