More on the Wreck of the Marmon Wasp

07/12/2016

We've spent some energy in revealing the full story behind the famous Marmon Wasp that won the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. What you see here is an image derived from microfilm records of a photo originally published in the Indianapolis Sun on May 30, 1910.

The Sun was an evening paper and was able to rush to press with information about a dramatic development at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 30, 1910. This was an accident to the Wasp, which had two days earlier won the 200-mile Wheeler Schebler Trophy, the first major auto race staged on the Brickyard.

The damage was significant but the Nordyke & Marmon Company leadership decided to repair it and within a couple of weeks the prized purpose-built racecar was back in competition.
