Barney Oldfield's Peerless Green Dragon chases down the Pope-Toledo racer of Alonzo Webb at the dirt mile horse track near St. Louis August 29, 1904. Oldfield was competing in the Louisiana Purchase Trophy and became blinded by dust kicked up from Webb's Pope-Toledo. Two spectators were killed in the accident. Oldfield fractured ribs and was briefly knocked unconscious when thrown from his car. It was just one of several amazing escapes for the man who would later be called, "The Master Driver of the World." The race ran concurrent with the St. Louis World's Fair.
