Spectators on Ormond Beach - 1906

This image could almost pass for a Claude Monet painting but is actually from a photograph published in the January 22, 1906 Indianapolis News. It is a shot of the scene of spectators watching practice for the Ormond Beach (1906) speed tournament. From 1904 to 1910 this annual winter competition was among the most important automobile competitions in America. It even attracted major cars and drivers of Europe. This paper's coverage concerned the 1906 competition when the event was probably at its zenith.

The photo ran in support of an article about the event. You can also find expanded coverage elsewhere on First Super Speedway. Check out other images from the event:

By the way, Monet passed away in 1926 so he could have captured this moment - he had 20 years to go!
