Stillman, Dawson in Marmon Entry

This image artifact was derived from a photograph originally published in the August 13, 1909, Indianapolis News. It was part of the coverage leading up to the first auto races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The driver was reportedly Harry "Sunshine" Stillman and the riding mechanic a then-20-year-old Joe Dawson - who went on to win the 1912 Indianapolis 500 as a "loaner" driver to National Motor Vehicle Company. Stillman was perhaps the first driver to test the iconic Marmon Wasp at the Speedway in March 1909.

The caption published with the original photograph read:

"Harry Stillman at the wheel, Joe Dawson, mechanician. The Marmon Forty is the Nordyke & Marmon Company's entry in the Wheeler-Schebler cup race next week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway."
