Stud of the Walk

I found this image in Barney Oldfield's personal scrapbook. It was published supporting a article on Oldfield's record breaking runs at Daytona Beach in March 1910. Oldfield's captured the imagination of the world with a 131.720 mph record for the measured mile. He attained a speed of 142 mph for two miles. It was amazing stuff that earned him praise from Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who expressed his admiration for what he called "the daring Yankee."  Oldfield's records:

  • One mile, flying start: 27.33 seconds.
  • One mile, standing start: 40.53 seconds.
  • One kilometer, flying start: 17.04 seconds.
  • Two miles, flying start: 55.87 seconds.

All of this makes me want to wear my Barney Oldfield, Speed King tee-shirt proudly. By the way, if you go to the link to check out the tee-shirt, don't pay too much attention to the copy. While it is not wholly inaccurate, it is misleading.
