1916 AAA Championship Points Table

Widely recognized as the first points-based American auto racing championship was conducted by the American Automobile Association in 1916. Dario Resta won the championship after and epic battle with First Super Speedway Hall of Fame driver, Johnny Aitken. World War I disrupted the continuance of the championship until it was resumed in 1920 with Gaston Chevrolet crowned as champion posthumously in a result that was contentious with revisionists attempting to award the championship to Tommy Milton.
