Harroun Leads at 300 Miles

07/07/2009

My latest addition to the collection of articles about the first Indianapolis 500 is a mid-race report by the evening edition, the Indianapolis News for May 30, 1911.  No radio, no TVs, but three major dailies with both an morning and afternoon editions. This was the quickest way to find out about developments without witnessing them first hand. At this report Ray Harroun, the eventual winner of the first Indianapolis 500, was leading the race at 300 miles. The quality of the reproduction here is poor - but legible. I include two batches to hopefully make it easier for those of you who are researchers or just determined enthusiasts to sift through some really neat information to come away better informed.
