Bourque & Holcomb

Driver William Bourque and his riding mechanic, Harry Holcomb, are pictured in their Knox Automobile Company entry for the first auto race meet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The duo perished after in a fatal accident during the first day of auto racing on August 19, 1909.  The image first appeared in the Indianapolis Star the following day, Friday August 20.
 
Bourque and Holcomb went down in history as the the first fatalities at the storied Speedway. Bourque had scored a victory in the thrid race of the day, a five mile sprint.
