Race VIPs, 1926

This image of four VIPs at the Charlotte Speedway board track at a November 1926 race meet is from the Paul Sheedy collection. From left-to-right we see Mrs. Dave Lewis, American Automobile Association (AAA) official Lee Folger, Mrs. Harry Hartz, and driver, promoter and Barney Oldfield business partner Waldo Stein.

Yes, they don't look all that happy - who knows why? From their coats, it's apparent that it was a chilly November day in Charlotte. The wood structure they are huddled in looks pretty stark and probably was not heated, although a coal-burning stove is not unimaginable. Regardless, the shelter was a step up from the grandstands, complete with viewing windows.

The Charlotte track was constructed in 1924.
