Lowell Road Race

This content is from the Barney Oldfield scrapbook, and was apparently was originally published in the Boston Post. It is from 1909, I know that because that is the year Lewis Strang drove for Buick and he is mentioned here. Someone wrote in the margin, “July 4/09.”

The primary article is not a race report, but an item that was published for the morning of the road race that was held in Lowell, Massachusetts. An associated article reports on a speed event that apparently occured the day prior to the 318-mile road race. Barney Oldfield, who was not entered in the main road race, appeared at this race meet and attempted to break mile speed records in a Benz racer he owned prior to purchasing the Blitzen Benz in 1910. This preliminary race meet had eleven events.

The primary article provides a handy entry list for the road race with brief profiles of drivers like Ralph De Palma and Harry Grant.
