Barney Oldfield and the Indy 500

Barney Oldfield only raced in two Indianapolis 500s - 1914 and 1916. He finished fifth both times. Most notable was his run for Stutz in 1914 when he was the first American entry to finish the great race as teams from Europe dominated.

Barney Oldfield, Jules Goux, Ralph De Palma, Teddy Tetzlaff and others are pictured with the grim reaper giving a sense of the sensationalism in newspapers that dominated the day. Rene Thomas won the race and Oldfield, driving a Stutz, was the highest finishing American in an American car.
