Barney Oldfield in Atlanta 1906

Thanks to auto racing history researcher Ken Parrotte, we have the attached article from the March 22, 1906 Atlanta Constitution. The article is full of color, focusing almost exclusively on the spectacle of just being at the track. The sport was still in its nascent stage and it is obvious the sights and sounds of automobiles at speed were still a marvel to the average person. Comparisons to horse racing are woven into the words, mostly remarking on how different the machines were in comparison to sometimes temperamental horses. Barney Oldfield was clearly the star of the day, and the event is a good example of his entertainment-focused barnstorming events that were both lucrative for him - and outside the sanction of the American Automobile Association.
