Bumbaugh & Wall

Attachment Bumbaugh102908 contains an image (published in the Indianapolis Star October 29, 1908) of a balloon sailing out over the horizon. Manning the vehicle is reported to be Captain George L. Bumbaugh, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Founder Carl Fisher's mentor in the skill of ballooning. Riding with Bumbaugh were W.G. (Guy) Wall who would design the 1912 Indianapolis 500 - winning National Motor Vehicle Company race car and M.E. Haywood of the Willis-Haywood-Holcomb Automobile Company. Bumbaugh also flew a balloon with Fisher the following day - October 30 - in one of the greatest automobile promotional stunts of the era when, instead of a basket, they carried a Stoddard-Dayton automobile from the Fisher Automobile Company over Indianapolis.
